Ants are social creatures and they love the same food we do. They come into our homes and workplaces to find things they can eat, particularly things that are sweet or sticky. The most common species are the garden and black ant, but you can also find infestations of flying ants and even tropical pharaoh ants in the Sri Lanka

It’s important to determine the exact species before trying to eradicate them, as they have different colony systems. In some cases, if a colony is scattered they can rebuild it very quickly, potentially giving you a larger problem than you had originally.

What Are Flying Ants?

There is a common misconception that ‘flying ants’ are a unique species of ant. In fact, they come from the same colonies as other ants.

If you have a black ant pest problem, flying ants are likely to follow during warmer months. Flying ants are the males, growing wings during their breeding cycle to find a mate.

Ants tend to nest in cavities within buildings, including homes, schools and any property where they can find access to a hole. They are attracted to these openings as it provides protection and warmth, and often food, such as crumbs or spillages from your kitchen, or a source in your garden.

Ants exist in caste societies and the most common type you see is the worker ant. Males and queens are the winged variety most seen flying around after thundery showers in summer endeavoring to mate. The males and females (presumptive queens) breed during flight. The females lose their wings after mating.

The males die shortly after sexual communion. Worker ants are usually shorter and smaller in body type than males or females. Worker Garden ants are the most common species in infestations and are 4mm long and black or dark brown in colour.

How do I get rid of Ant Infestations?

Ants come into your home looking for food and are attracted to the foodstuff we keep in our kitchens, particularly the sweet and sticky substances. You should take measures to ensure your food containers are adequately sealed. Also try to restrict the amount of food left in open packets in the cupboards.

In addition, ensure you clean up spills and leakages as quickly as you can. Pay special attention to out of the way areas such as under cookers or white goods appliances. Your pet’s food is at as much risk of contamination as human food so clear away their bowls as soon as possible.
